Baklava for me,
And baklava for work,
I love baklava, it's so easy to make and so much fun to say.
Baklava! Baklava! Baklava!
Here's the recipe:
Baklava
- 1 pound frozen phyllo sheets
- 1 cup melted butter
- 2 cups finely chopped walnuts or blanched almonds
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Thaw phyllo pastry and separate sheets according to package directions. Keep pastry not being used covered with clean damp dish towel to keep it from drying out. Combine nuts, 1/2 cup sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Place 8-10 phyllo pastry sheets in a greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan or cookie sheet, and brush the top sheet all over with melted butter. Sprinkle the nut mixture over the buttered pastry. Repeat layers until phyllo pastry is used up. Cut baklava pastry into 2-inch diamonds and pour remaining butter over the diamonds. Bake at 400° until brown and crisp, about 30 to 35 minutes. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine remaining 3/4 cup sugar, honey, 1 cup water, and lemon juice; bring to a boil. Boil baklava syrup for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until syrupy. Cool and pour over baklava.
Note: I usually only use about a 1/3 to 1/2 of the syrup mixture, or I double the baklava recipe and divide one batch of syrup between two trays of baklava.
I also tend to run out of the nut mixture before I'm done with all of the phyllo sheets, so I usually mix up at least a half recipe extra of the mix in case I need more.
Mmmmmmm - that looks so yummy! I think I'm going to make some.

oh this brings back memories! My mom used to make baklava for us all of the time. I always had this idea that it must be really hard to make. My mom used to put cloves in the middle of each piece... thanks for the memory and the recipe!
