When I was in high school, I participated in a student exchange program in Japan. I lived with a Japanese host family and attended the local school. At lunch time we would push our desks together and have our lunches in the classroom. Everyone was always excited to see what kind of bentos or lunch boxes we had brought from home. I was always amazed at the beautiful presentation and variety of foods in my friends' bentos. Bentos are a big deal in Japan. There are tons of books and magazines devoted to the subject and more bento accessories than you can even imagine. Most bentos consist of rice with some kind of meat and vegetables. But even western style lunches can get the cute touch. This website has amazing bentos done for children (like the ones above), just click on the right side of any of the numbers. Lots of cute bentos at this site too.
Such wonderful ideas! I had never heard of bentos until now. They are so cute and fun! We are planning a picnic for Easter, and now I want to make bento boxes for everyone. Wouldn't that be cute? Thanks for sharing this with us!

My mom used to make bento for me when I was little. And later, she would bring "grown-up bento" to me at my job sometimes. Here is a pretty neat daily site I love to look at: Minmin's Obento (http://www.fotolog.net/minmin/) --not as cute, but nice to look at. And then there are lots of bento here too-- http://www.yoppi.ne.jp/obento/

I LOVE it! I so want to make up for being the "microwave-it" mom to Oscar by making him awesomely cute lunches when he goes off to school! I can just see him opening up his bento box to see his sandwich smiling back at him. Think he'd get too beat up?
